Deep Trouble - Deep Thoughts August 30, 2008 |
Greetings from Michael Knight, Editor, Earth Change Report
Deep Trouble – Deep Thoughts The weather just might be perfect where you live, but in some places it is disrupting the lives of millions, right now. So it’s worth a reminder that while Earth Change Report brings you the news of what’s going on in Nature around the world, the purpose behind it is to keep us all focused on how well prepared we are (or not) for when something similar comes our way. I am sure that subscribers to Earth Change Report are more than capable of thinking outside the box. It takes courage to do that, because most people go into denial when they are faced with the idea of a seriously difficult future. Those who don’t do the denial thing, are looking for answers rather than problems. The more you know about the ‘problem’ the better equipped you are to make it go away or minimize its effects. My new eBook “Earth Changes – Mind Matters” was written to illustrate in detail what we can expect in the way of catastrophes in the next few short years. Yes, it does address what science is warning us about in the way of monster solar storms that will likely kill your computer, the power grid, and everything electrical on the planet (as just one example). And it does address the “unseen hand” that has for a long time had an agenda that is totally anti-humanity. BUT it goes to the heart of the solution, and that is the unseen power we all have within us to create a far more self-sufficient personal future. This is not esoteric. This is science. And that’s why the mind REALLY matters. It’s the most powerful asset we have. And that’s the secret ingredient in “Earth Changes – Mind Matters.” Now back to the news. Nature knows no borders like we do.
Our world is an interactive system of life in the raw – seasons and weather that can be beautiful one moment and deadly the next. It’s easy to dismiss what’s happening in some other part of the world as nothing more than “bad news,” at least for those involved – but the truth is, at least from what I see in gathering information from many parts of the globe – that every day more and more ‘ordinary folk’ in many places are finding their lives being turned upside down. Nature, it seems, is no longer whispering to us that we should be aware of her changes.
She is now letting us know in no uncertain terms that we are in the grip of BIG events that right now, every day of the week, are spelling catastrophe for millions. Just one example would be the husband and father who lost his wife and six children in a wrenching heartbeat this week. They were killed in minutes by a storm-induced landslide in the Philippines. Can you imagine the terrible sadness he is feeling even now? There is nothing you or I or any nation or government can do to stop these tragedies either. All we can do, if we are consciously determined to do the best we possibly can for ourselves and our families, is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. No matter where we live we MUST be prepared to be proactive rather than reactive. This is how that goes. While the US media is fixated on the arrival of Hurricane Gustav, a river in India that changed course after two centuries is forcing the rescue and evacuation of at least one million people…and another one million are in dire straits. The Hindustan Times says the Kosi River, “sometimes known as the Sorrow of Bihar” has cut a totally new channel after the collapse of an embankment in Nepal. Now, instead of flood waters rising and receding in a matter of days, the river has found vast new areas of countryside to flood. Gustav Proves Deadly Hurricane Gustav which has already killed at least 59 people, is thrashing its way toward the US Gulf Coast. Workers are already being evacuated from many of the 4000 oil rigs in the Gulf. Racing against time ahead of the arrival of Gustav ( see a NOAA image loop here – it’s awesome) New Orleans is working to evacuate tens of thousands of people – even though it’s not certain that the city will be hit. Lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina have seen the city invest in a fleet of evacuation buses – but a lot of people, even those who survived Katrina, for some reason haven’t bothered to find out where the closest pickup point will be. Nevertheless police with bullhorns are patrolling the city warning people to be on the move.
However this time round, the Superdome that served as a shelter for thousands during Katrina, will have its doors locked once a certain capacity has been reached – and those left outside will be on their own.
Forecasters say it’s too early to predict exactly where Gustav will make landfall. It could be anywhere from Texas to the Florida panhandle.
Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf? “According to a survey conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health Project on the Public and Biological Security, over one third of the inhabitants of high-risk hurricane areas said that if government officials issued a mandatory evacuation …they would ignore it and stay. “The poll included a special sample of the New Orleans metropolitan area (and) shows that even after Hurricane Katrina, most New Orleans residents (61%) do not know the locations of evacuation shelters if they need to go to one.” Do you? Do you have a plan?
The Best Laid Plans "oft gang alay."
I dropped Judith off at the Departure doors at the airport last week, and to avoid parking fees we agreed I would pick her up at the Arrival (baggage claim) doors on her return. I'd be there at 3pm. Guess what. I was 10 minutes late. She was not at the arrival doors as expected. I circled five times and eventually parked the car and went looking. She was upstairs at the departure doors - because she thought she might have made a mistake by staying at the baggage claim area. Just shows you - unless you are CLEAR in everyone's mind on EXACTLY what the meeting place will be, and unless you STAY THERE....things can get screwed up real quick. In closing, let me say this. Luck doesn’t cut it. Common sense, practice and planning does. Sincerely. Michael Knight.
